Family Foodways: Beyond the Root - Cooking with Sweet Potato Leaves with Chef Josmine

  • East Warren Kitchen 16835 East Warren Avenue Detroit, MI, 48224 United States (map)

To honor all of the incredible time each chef puts into sharing their culture through these dishes, we are asking all attendees to RSVP. This is due to the limited space for the class, and to ensure there's enough for everyone to have a small tasting.

Together, we'll explore the rich history and culinary traditions of cooking leafy greens across Africa and the African Diaspora while learning how to transform often-overlooked sweet potato leaves into a comforting, flavorful stewed green served over white rice.

Featuring fresh sweet potato leaves, garlic, onions, tomatoes, and hot peppers, this class is a celebration of seasonal harvests, shared traditions, and the joy of cooking together. Whether you're growing sweet potatoes for the first time or looking for new ways to use your harvest, you'll leave inspired to make this nourishing dish at home.

Chef Josmine Evans is a culinary historian, storyteller, and founder of Indigo Culinary Co., where food serves as a bridge to history, culture, and community. Through cooking, storytelling, and hands-on learning, she celebrates the rich culinary traditions of the African diaspora and the stories carried through every meal.

As co-founder of The Joy Project in Detroit, Josmine creates welcoming spaces where growing, cooking, and gathering foster healing, belonging, and connection. Passionate about preserving food traditions and inspiring others to reconnect with their cultural roots, she encourages people to plant the seeds, cook the recipes, and carry these stories forward for future generations.
